I’m running because families in Miami can’t afford to live here anymore, because our democracy is under real stress, and because the politics of cruelty toward immigrants is not who we are. I’ve spent forty years telling South Florida’s story. Now I want to fight for it.
In this environment, we must confront the structural drivers of cost in South Florida, including housing supply constraints and insurance instability. Families here in South Florida need breathing room — and policies that actually lower pressure instead of adding volatility. When people who grew up here cannot afford to live here, something fundamental is out of balance.
This isn’t theoretical for me. My own daughters have made the decision to build their lives in other cities — even other countries — because the cost of housing in South Florida made staying here unrealistic. A community should be able to retain its young professionals and allow longtime residents to retire without fear that rising costs will push them out.
We need to address this as a structural issue — we need to build more workforce housing, and stabilize the insurance market. The goal is restoring balance so families can plan their futures here with confidence.
